The Laboratory of Computer System and Architecture is backed by the ICT ( Institute of Computing Technology ) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The Laboratory was approved to be officially open both at home and abroad in 2006. The director of this Laboratory’s Academic Committee is Academician Li Guojie and the Laboratory’s director is Professor Sun Ninghui. The Laboratory now has an academic staff of 40 members, including 1 academician, 8 professors, 1 winner of the “National Outstanding Science Fund”, 2 national-level candidates for the “New Century Ten Million Talents Project”, 1 candidate selected for “CAS’s Hundred Talented Individuals Project”. The Laboratory now has 1 post doctor, 53 Ph.D. candidates, and 52 master candidates. The key Laboratory now comprises seven topic groups, namely, High-Performance Computer Architecture Group, Advanced Microprocessor Technology Group, Advanced Microsystem Group, Reliability Design Group, Operating System Group, Compiling Technology Group, and VLSI Test, Design and Verification Group. The topic groups are engaged mainly in the application fundamental research in computer architecture related areas, with emphasis on the research of super-parallel computer systems and multi-core processors. They are presently undertaking the “973 Program”, the “863 Program”, Key Fund Projects, etc. Research Areas and Contents: The Laboratory carries out fundamental research and high-tech leading edge exploration by taking full advantage of the discipline of computer architecture and by concentrating on super-parallel computer systems and multi-core processors. Its main research areas include: design theory of high-performance computer systems;novel principle, novel structure, and novel methods of microprocessor design;novel-architecture-oriented simulation, operating systems, application modeling, and optimization technology through studying the architectures of novel high-performance computers;micro-architectures of high-end processors;virtualization technology of cross-platform multi-systems, design method of multi-core parallel processors on large-scale slice, design method of extendable and reconfigurable processors;models, languages, and compiling of parallel program design;code generation and optimization of advanced microprocessors;reliability design of computer architectures and micro architectures;self-test, self-diagnosis, and self-healing design of multi-core processors;VLSI test and design verification methods, and innovation methods and key technologies being constantly provided for the development of high-performance computer system and high-performance processor design area. Its purpose is to solve the pressing important problems of the country in related areas, so as to promote the research progress of computer architecture discipline.
Prospective Goals: Through building the key Laboratory, strengthen the discipline development of such an advantageous area as computer architecture, the innovated project team building, and the hierarchical talent nurturing, enhance the collective innovation strength in the computer architecture area, ensure the sustainable development of important projects such as “Loongson CPU chips”, “Dawning super server”, etc., strengthen the original innovation and integration innovation in the scientific research work of the CAS’s third period innovation and the national “Eleventh Five-Year-Plan” and in the core area of advanced computer technologies, continually accomplish splendidly the research tasks strategically needed by our nation, as well as constantly provide competitive core technologies for China’s information industry. The Laboratory is making an effort to become an internationally first-class base for scientific research, technology innovation, and talent nurture in the area of computer architecture.
