The Institute of Computing Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as ICT) was established in 1956. It was the first academic institution to specialize in comprehensive research into computer science and technology in China. ICT successfully produced China's first general-purpose digital computer, and has formed a R&D base for high-performance computer technology in China. It is also the birthplace of China's first general-purpose CPU chip.
As the cradle for China's computer industry, ICT has cultivated hundreds of the earliest technical staff in the field of computer industry. Over 20 academicians worked or studied here. Along with the development of discipline and technology, a number of research units came out of ICT one after another, including the Institute of Microelectronics, the Computing Center, the Institute of Software, and Computer Network Information Center, as well as hi-tech companies such as Lenovo and Dawning. Over the past 50 years, ICT has made remarkable achievements in scientific and technological research. By the end of 2008, ICT as the first unit has won 633 items of scientific and technological achievements in all; 180 awards for science and technology at the State, Academy, Municipal and Ministerial levels in all, among which 37 State level awards for science and technology (including 4 awards for which ICT is not the first unit), 154 Academy and Ministry level awards (including 6 awards for which ICT is not the first unit).
At present, ICT has 10 scientific research entities with administrative functions and 6 functional units at its headquarters, and 7 branches in Suzhou, Shanghai, Ningbo, Zhaoqing, Taizhou, Dongguan and Qinhuangdao.
Focusing on “Fundamental, Strategic and Advanced Research” and holding firmly to the new-era guidelines of Chinese Academy of Sciences, ICT takes upon itself the mission of “becoming a leader in computing technology, being concerned with the national interest and people's livelihood, and leading Chinese IT industry”, and strives to be a world leading research and academic institute through fulfilling the motto of “Innovation and Seeking Truth”.
