Network Technology Research Center (NTRC)

Date: Feb 14, 2023
The Network Technology Research Center (NTRC) of ICT, CAS focuses on the R&D of network architectures, theories and systems. NTRC produces a large volume of exciting research results with proprietary intellectual property rights. The research findings have appeared in top international conferences and journals such as SIGCOMM, INFOCOM, CoNEXT, AAAI, TON, TCOM, JSAC and TMC. NTRC has in recent years undertaken numerous significant projects under the support of China’s National Key Research and Development Plan, its National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 plan), and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The research team is composed of seven professors, twelve associate professors, fifty-one PhD candidates and fifty graduate students. Stable, long-term collaborations established with prominent universities and research institutes have boosted international cooperation in research and student training. NTRC is making strides toward its transformation into a world-class network research group.

Research Themes
Intelligent network and system group
  • NTRC’s Intelligent Network and System Group tackles difficult challenges inherent in the new generation of intelligent computing-power network architecture and systems. Its research conducted on intelligent network traffic engineering, joint optimization of in-network computing, intelligent measurement and scheduling systems and platforms, among others, is helping to improve the level of network intelligence, optimize application efficiency, promote the implementation of technical achievements in key industries, and lay a basis for the information superbahn, satellite networks, future network facilities, and autonomous counter root name servers.

Mobile Computing Research Group
  • The Mobile Computing Research Group (MCRG)strives to innovate the basic theories and core technologies of intelligent interconnection and collaborative computing in heterogeneous networks. The group is committed to breaking through technical difficulties in network deterministic forwarding, and developing more efficient arrangement and collaborative optimization of computing network resources. MCRG has undertaken more than 10 major national research projects with support from China’s National Natural Science Foundation, 973 Program, National Key Research and Development Program, and the Broadband Wireless Major Project of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. With more than 80 papers in TMC, TPDS, JSAC, INFOCOM, IJCAI and CIKM to our credit, MCRG has applied for 46 national invention patents and 16 software copyrights. MCRG has presided over and participated in the formulation of 14 ITU international standards and more than 20 national telecommunication industry standards. Our research results have been widely used in core network and equipment products of China Unicom, Huawei, ZTE and other enterprises.

Network Architecture and System Group
  • Network measurement, network protocols, programmable network, and testbed for networking innovations are the focus of the Network Architecture and System Group. Our major work is in these areas: 1) network measurement and management—large-scale network traffic measurement including the design of Intent-driven Measurement system, high-performance packet processing, traffic characterization and prediction, traffic engineer, and measurement-driven network security; 2) network protocols for low-latency data transmission—security routing algorithms with mobility support, QoE-driven transport protocols (MPQUIC), congestion control algorithms and novel content delivery networks; 3) programmable network—in the data plane, software-hardware co-design to facilitate high-performance distributed systems and implement the programmable virtual router; and in the control plane—investigating SDN programming languages, NFV frameworks and network verification; 4) testbed for internet innovation—test and verify new protocols and algorithms fundamental for internet innovation with a testbed that is open, easy for programming, and able to keep isolation of slices.

Blockchain R&D Lab
  • Blockchain R&D Laboratory’s research in high throughput blockchains, chain interoperability, privacy protection, secure large scale data sharing, blockchain performance analysis and benchmarking has been undertaken as China’s National Key Research & Development projects, National Natural Science Funding projects, State Grid Technology Funding projects, and Directed Research projects under the Science and Technology Plan of the Beijing Science and Technology Committee. Our lab has published more than ten high level academic papers in top academic conferences and journals such as IEEE JSAC, SIGCOMM, NSDI and INFOCOM, and has patented more than ten intelligence properties on blockchain-specific areas. Blockchain R&D lab drafted the first nationwide blockchain performance evaluation standard as well as blockchain international standards like IEEE P2418.2. Active long-term cooperation with prominent national organizations and institutions, such as the Institute of Digital Currency, People’s Bank of China, State Grid and ChainMaker, has contributed to the lab’s success. It earned the highest title in National Blockchain Contest directed by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It has been given a grant by the Ethereum Foundation, a first in China.

Internet Infrastructure Laboratory
The Internet Infrastructure Laboratory researches applied engineering technology for internet infrastructure. In preparing for the intelligent stage of the informatization process, the fourth industrial revolution, and the newest stage of internet development, the laboratory focuses on data interoperating technology research and on development of a data interoperating system. The laboratory goals are for promoting development of internet digital infrastructure technology and supporting development of a digital economy based on data elements and data governance. With data a core internet value today, internet infrastructure technologies are vital for supporting the full cycle of data collection, transmission, storage, computing, application and data extinction. In the buildup of this digital infrastructure, the lab supports data interconnection across domains (organizational domains, regions, countries, content areas). Specific targets of our R&D include intelligent algorithm management, and development of technologies for data identification and data ownership protection, for identity authentication and access authorization, and for data analysis and classification.

Intelligent Finance Group
  • From the perspective of technical value, AI technology is deeply integrating the financial business scenario while seeking to solve specific industry issues that include but go beyond data analytics. The Intelligent Finance Group is dedicated to being a key conduit toward realizing automation of business processes, bridging the information gap, and building inclusive finance. Our group’s work has entered the stage of value creation in developing solutions for obtaining incremental business, reducing risk cost, improving operation cost, and enhancing customer satisfaction.
