Wireless Communication Technology Research Center (WCTRC)

Date: May 16, 2023
Established to meet the demands of national strategies and industrial development, the Wireless Communication Technology Research Center (WCTRC) is designated by the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ICT/CAS) to carry out innovative academic and industry-supported research to advance the emerging tech revolution in information and communications. The research center operates under the guidance of CAS Innovation 2020 and of ICT’s “One Positioning, Three Major Breakthroughs, and Five Key Cultivation Directions.”

WCTRC is committed to solving the problem of China’s lack of core and chip in wireless communication. The center regards the super base station as core technology supported by baseband chips and protocol stacks. Research done by the center involves initiatives related to the integration network of space, outer space, and earth. Including in this broad research range are advanced communication theory, critical chips and software, key modules and equipment, electronic instruments, and experimental platforms.

WCTRC independently has developed equipment and capabilities in these fields:
1.A high-performance vector DSP kernel and corresponding tool chains that specialize in communication. A self-developed terminal baseband chip with high performance, low power consumption, and high level of security. Chip peak and real average processing capabilities reach international advanced level.

2.A full set of protocol stacks to support 2G to 5G and satellite communications. Universities/research institutes, chip designers, equipment manufacturers and telecommunication operators are among the center’s clients.

3.Super base stations, super terminals, and electronic instruments to support Big Data communication in the integration network of space, outer space, and earth. Equipment has been deeply applied in Chinese satellite communication.

4.An experimental platform for the integration network of space, outer space, and earth to support algorithm/equipment/system-level evaluation of advanced communication architectures and critical technologies, and to support argument deployment and construction optimization of important engineering advances.

WCTRC has published more than 200 papers and best papers in telecommunications journals and conference proceedings, including IEEE Communication, IEEE Wireless Communication, IEEE Transactions on Communication, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, and IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. With more than 200 authorized patents and credited with more than thirty wireless communication standards/proposals, the center and its researchers have received numerous awards, including the CAS Development Promotion, a Beijing CAS special award of Scientific and Technological Transferring Achievements, a Chinese Excellent Patent Award, and second prizes in competitions for the Beijing Science and Technology Award, Chinese Institute of Electronics Technical Invention Award, and Invention Patent in Beijing.

Comprising over 100 researchers to date, our excellent, mature R&D team in the field of wireless communications includes distinguished supervisors of doctoral and master’s level students, and distinguished researchers from world-renowned university tech departments including from the University of Sydney, Columbia University, and the University of New South Wales.

We promote integration of domestic and foreign academic cultures and joint establishment of international laboratories. Our team structure is reasonable and attracts a wealth of talent. Currently, WCTRC has obtained several ministry-level and other titles including the Beijing Key Laboratory of Mobile Computing and New Terminals, the Beijing International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Mobile Computing and Intelligent Communication, and the 4G Project of Public Service Platform, Beijing.

WCTRC is responsible for “addressing wireless communication issues in China, and benefiting Chinese people by innovation.” With a team culture of “Unity, hard work, knowledge and happiness,” our researchers are pioneering green and self-developed wireless communication technologies.
